Relationship between Job Stress and Turnover Intention in Optometrists: Focusing on Gwangju and Jeollanam-do

Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between job stress and turnover intention in optometrists and to investigate the mediating role of burnout.

Methods: The participants were 393 optometrists working in Gwangju and Jeollanamdo, interviewed from January 1 to February 28, 2019. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.0.

Results: The mean scores of job stress, burnout, and turnover intention were 2.18 ¡¾ 0.30 (4-point scale), 2.61 ¡¾ 0.51 (5-point scale), and 2.87 ¡¾ 0.77 (5-point scale), respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in turnover intention according to age, marital status, religion, working area, subjective health status, sleeping time, work duration in present optical shop, and monthly income. Turnover intention was positively correlated with job stress and burnout, and job stress was positively correlated with burnout. As per the results of the multiple regression analysis, job stress (B=.740, p<.001) and burnout (B=.549, p<.001) were found to be associated with turnover intention. As per the mediation analysis, burnout played a mediating role in the association between job stress and turnover intention (Z = 8.111, p<.001).
Conclusions: In this study, it was confirmed that optometrists¡¯ job stress was associated with turnover intention, with burnout playing a mediating role in this relationship. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and implement programs to manage job stress and burnout in an effort to reduce turnover intention in optometrists.
